Dear Colonial High School Students, Families, and Community Members,

I hope this letter finds you well and having an enjoyable summer. It is my sincere pleasure and honor to serve this great school and community. Colonial High School has established a tradition of academic and cultural excellence that is the result of a collegial partnership between the school, staff, and parents who provide diverse experiences for all students. My goal is to provide an academically rigorous environment that educates intelligent and motivated students. Colonial High School teaches students to lead with integrity, to act justly in service of others, and to pursue excellence in every endeavor.

The Department of Education released preliminary school grades this summer. Based on the grading requirements that determine how schools are graded, Colonial High School’s scorecard for the 2016-2017 school year reflects an overall C grade. Although our current grade standing has not changed, it’s evident that we are moving in the right direction under stricter guidelines with the grading requirements. I am excited to share with you that our graduation rate has jumped above 91%. This is the highest ever in school history. I mention this information because these results will be the driving force for our focused work, as we continue accelerating the momentum for our students.

It is my expectation that each Grenadier pursues personal excellence with the help and support of teachers, staff, parents and our community. Our continued focus will be on academic learning. Students, it is important to start the year off well and maintain that academic excellence. Practicing the following basic routines will help to alleviate course difficulties. Attend school each day and be on time for classes. Complete and turn in homework assignments. Focus in class from the first bell to the last bell. Invest time in studying. Be respectful, responsible and helpful. Set a goal for grades and test scores, and work hard to attain those goals with a positive and driven approach. As you move forward and continue to grow as a Grenadier, I challenge you to strive for personal excellence in all that you do.

I encourage you to take a few moments to discuss goals with your child. It is worthwhile for students to have goals for their grades, various test scores, and school activities. Being involved in activities is important for student connectivity to school. I encourage each Grenadier to participate in at least one extra-curricular or co-curricular activity. Positive experiences and friendships are often a result of being a part of our performing arts department, athletic teams, clubs, and other student organizations.

I encourage you to participate in one or more organization such as the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), the School Advisory Council (SAC), or Parent Leadership Council (PLC). The deep support of parents and the community has a very positive impact on our school. Meeting dates may be found on the school website. We are going to have a great school year!

It’s Great to be a Grenadier!
