Dual Enrollment
Dual enrollment is an acceleration program intended to shorten the time required for students to complete the requirements that lead to a degree, broaden the scope of curricular options, and increase the depth of study available for a particular subject. Courses taken through dual enrollment count towards both high school and college completion at the same time.
The Dual Enrollment Program is an opportunity to take courses at the college level, so the amount of work necessary to succeed is usually much greater than in high school courses. Because dual enrollment courses become part of a permanent college transcript, you must commit to doing the work required or risk jeopardizing future college plans.
Students at Colonial High School can earn up to 24 college credits attending classes on campus. These classes are taken during 1st and 3rd period and are semester long courses. Students take 2 classes during each period. If students have met many of their graduation requirements there is an opportunity to take classes at Valencia during the school day that still count towards high school and college credit. Students have the option of providing their own transportation, or by utilizing the free shuttle service provided through a partnership with Lynx and Valencia College. Keep in mind that if a student is under the age of 16, a parent/guardian will need to remain on campus during the duration of the student’s course(s).
Criteria:
• Be a resident of Orange or Osceola County and enrolled in grades 6 - 12 at a public school.
• 3.0 unweighted high school GPA for grades 6-11th; or 3.0 weighted GPA for 12th grade. Middle school students must have a high school level GPA.
• Demonstrate college readiness in reading, writing, and math via the PERT, ACT or SAT by the assessment scores deadline. Valencia accepts any combination of scores.
Complete the Dual Enrollment Application which can be obtained from Brandon Thompson in the Guidance Office, Room 214. Submit the completed application to Brandon Thompson.
